Your first visit
If you have never had a sports or deep tissue massage before, knowing what happens takes most of the awkwardness out of it. Here is exactly how a first session at the treatment room in Barnoldswick works.
Before you come
Wear or bring loose clothing you can move in — gym shorts or leggings are ideal. Try not to eat a heavy meal in the hour before, and go easy on the coffee. If you are coming straight from work, that is fine; there is no need to change beforehand.
When you arrive
We start with a conversation: where it hurts, how long it has been going on, what you do day to day, and anything medical I should know about. Then I look at how the area actually moves. This part matters — it is usually where the cause turns up.
During the treatment
You will be undressed to your underwear and covered with towels throughout, with only the area being worked on uncovered. If that is not comfortable for you, say so and we will work around it. Pressure is yours to set: tell me if it is too much and I will ease off.
Afterwards
I will usually suggest a couple of things to do at home — a stretch, a change in how you sit, or simply drinking more water. If it would help, I will tell you when I think you should come back. There is never any pressure to rebook on the spot.
How long and how much
Sessions run from thirty minutes to two hours, and the price depends on the time rather than the treatment — so you can decide what your body needs on the day rather than picking from a menu in advance.
Not sure what you need? The treatments page explains each one, or just describe the problem when you message and I will suggest something.
Common first-visit questions
What should I wear to a sports massage?
Loose, comfortable clothing you can move in — gym shorts or leggings are ideal. For most treatments you will be undressed to your underwear and covered with towels throughout, with only the area being worked on uncovered. If that is not comfortable for you, say so when you arrive and we will work around it.
Will a deep tissue massage hurt?
Deep tissue work can be intense, but it should never be something you have to endure. Tell me and I will adjust. The pressure is always yours to set.
Will I be sore afterwards?
Some people feel a little tender for a day or so after deeper work, much like the day after training. Drinking plenty of water and keeping gently moving usually settles it.
How long should my first session be?
Sixty minutes suits most first visits — enough time to talk through what is going on, assess how you are moving, and still do proper work. If you have more than one area you want looked at, ninety minutes avoids cutting either short.
